Ordering and using Lymed Animal products

What measurements do I need to choose the right product? Can I take measurements myself?

All Lymed Animal products are custom-made based on the individual measures of each animal. We use our own technology to desing and manufacture the garments, and the measures needed for production are very specific. This way we can ensure the pressure level, right fit and comfortability of each product. Measures must be taken by our trained retailers.

Why does it take several weeks to manufacture the product?

All Lymed custom-made garments are made in Tampere, from start to finish. Products are not semi-finished: the manufacturing process starts when the order is received. Every order is scheduled based on the date when Lymed has received the order. Each product is individually manufactured; the patterns for cutting are made and product is sewn by hand. Some orders may require communication between the ordering party and Lymed’s production before products can be made, which can affect the manufacturing time.

Can I return the product if I'm not satisfied?

All Lymed Animal -products are custom-made. That’s why the products can not be returned. However, it’s often possible to make some changes to the product after manufacturing. In case of reclamation, please contact your retailer.

When should I replace the garment with a new one?

The right fit of the product should be monitored regularly. Garment must be replaced with a new one, if: – Elasticity of the product has deteriorated significantly – Size or weight of the animal changes – Product feels greasy and does not become clean when washed in a washing machine – It’s not reasonable to repair the broken garment, considering the overall condition of the product.

Animal rolls around when the garment is on. How can I help my animal to get accustomed to the garment?

Familiarizing the animal with a new garment is very important in order to avoid problems during the introduction phase. New sensations caused by the pressure may cause reactions. If the introduction of the product has been carried out properly and the garment is put on correctly, animal should calm down in due time. Instructions for use and many useful tips for introduction phase can be found on the information sheet delivered together with every product.

How long period of time the garment can be used?

Suitable time for use is connected to the type of treatment and desired results. Long-time use is safe and does not affect to e.g. medicating the animal. Right time for use can be determined by testing and observing the animal.

  • Try to use the garment as a preventive tool and only when required.
  • When treating behavioral problems it’s recommended to put the garment on 30 min – 1 h before the problematic behaviour or triggering event (e.g. fireworks, thunder, travelling).
  • Working animals and athletes may use the garment during and after performance or work.
  • If the garment is used constantly, also when not specifically needed, animal may get used to the pressure. That may lower the desired impact. When the garment is used for treatment of muclulosceletal disorders or for post-operative purposes, the person responsible for the treatment should give thorough guidelines for use. Compression garments for racing sighthounds
  • It’s recommended to use the garment only when needed – Products are designed to be used used for a short period of time and only right after race performance to boost the recovery process.
  • Use after performance for 1-2 hours, for example during the cool-down.

Pressure treatment

What is the theoretical basis supporting the use of pressure treatment on animals?

Indications for use are very much similar to human’s. Knowledge on pressure treatment on animals is largely based on scientific research made in the field of traditional human medicine. The calming effect of pressure is rooted in strengthening proprioseptics and awakening the deep sensory input. The function of the supporting garment is based on enhancing proprioseptics of the body, body awareness and deep pressure input. You can learn more about main principles of pressure treatment from our website.

How should I know beforehand if my animal will benefit from using pressure garment?

Pressure garments can be used to treat and prevent various types of problems, e.g. calming (fear and anxiety caused by e.g. fireworks, thunder or travelling, hyperactivity), recovery from strain or stress (especially working animals and athletes), disorders in musculoskeletal system, pain control, tool for training, improving concentration, post-operative use (scar treatment, pain control, prevention of edema).

Lymed Dog ™ users can include sports and recreational dogs, service and guide dogs, detection and rescue dogs as well as police canine units. Common pets may also benefit from the garments. Breed, size or age do not set restrictions for use. Every animal is individual, but new research on both humans and animals constantly provide promising results on effectives of pressure treatment. When used as a tool for training, you may want to consult professional trainer for help.

Material

Are Lymed products waterproof? Can they be used during swimming?

Lymed products are not waterproof. Garments are suitable for use during swimming. It’s also not harmful for the product to get wet in rain. The product should be dried as soon as possible. Using wet product for a long time is not recommended. Remember to wash the product following the wear & care instructions after every swim to remove all dirt.

Your wear & care instructions say that products should be washed after every use. Why?

Wear & care instructions guide how to take care of Lymed products in a best possible way. Our goal is to offer product that last as long as possible without compromising its effectiveness. Products should be washed as frequently as possible. From a textile point of view, correct wash is the most important aspect affecting the longevity of the product. A pressure garment has to endure a lot – no other garment has to endure the same.

Pressure is formed by elastane fibers. These fibers, the inspected through a microscope, has little holes that open up when the garment is stretched (e.g. in use). In contact with the skin or fur, these holes fill up with up sebum and skin particles. When the product is undressed, the fibers relax and the holes close again – with everything inside them. In time, this destroys the fiber, and the garment will lose its elasticity and eventually breaks. This is most commonly seen in old swimwear. By washing the garment in a washing machine without fabric softeners, the elastane fibers open up and all of the dirt will be removed.

How should I wash the garment?

We recommend washing the garment after every use to ensure the longevity of the product. Products should be washed in washing machine (40 ֯C), inside out and fastenings closed. Using fabric softeners (or detergents including softeners) is harmful for the product. Detailed wear & care instructions are delivered together with every Lymed product.

Why there are no natural fibers, e.g. cotton, in your products?

There are a lot of requirements for the fabric of compression garments as textile and medical material. When evaluating the suitability of the material, it is important to pay attention to the ability of a material to recover to its original state. That makes up the actual compression and its “permanence”. Based on textile material alone, or even the amount of elastane in the fabric, it is nearly impossible to decide how the product performs, what is its resistance to pressure or how well it does its job. Also, the feel towards the skin plays a huge role; does the material feel firm but soft at the same time.

Elastic limit is the greatest amount of stress that can be applied to the fiber without causing permanent deformation. Up to the elastic limit the material will return to its original shape and dimension. Beyond elastic limit, material will start deform plastically and the property of the material is known as plasticity. Value of intensity of stress corresponding to this limit force is called elastic limit of the material. For example, cotton is inelastic and rigid fiber. 70% of cotton fiber consists of crystalline sections. After stretching cotton fiber will not return to its original position. It remains in stretched shape, which is not wanted in many case (for example bagging knees in pants). Also, environmental and internal conditions, like moisture and temperature, have effect on cotton’s elongation properties. Despite of cotton’s comfortable feel and breathability it is not suitable for

I washed the product for the first time and now it feels different when putting it on? Why?

We always recommend washing the garment before first use. The feeling of the product will change after a few wash-and-wears, when the composition of the fabric adjusts. This is normal, and does not effect the pressure level of the product.

What if there is some wear and tear in my product?

Lymed products have four month warranty starting from the manufacturing date, which can be found on label attached to the product. The warranty covers, in principle, premature failures on the material or failures in manufacturing. Warranty does not cover ordinary wear and tear or damage caused by the animal. In cases of supposed manufacturing failure, please contact your retailer.

Lymed provides repair service for its products. This way, it is not always necessary to order a new garment if the original product can still be repaired. Products can also be strengthened in places which wear and tear easily. If holes or tears appear around the seams, it’s recommended to pay extra attention to the wearing technique. Pulling the seams should always be avoided.
